Design & Build
The AFI Northampton features a solid wood construction combining hardwood and veneer with a walnut stained finish. The unit employs a Murphy bed mechanism that allows transformation from desk to bed position. When closed, it presents as a substantial desk with a 54.38 by 13.38-inch work surface and integrated drawer. The built-in USB charging station is discreetly incorporated with two ports accessible during desk use. The folding mechanism utilizes hardware to support the 149-pound unit and up to 800 pounds of additional weight. The mattress rests on a supportive platform that folds with the bed frame. Care requires only wiping with a dry cloth, making maintenance straightforward. The classic walnut finish suits various decor styles from traditional to contemporary.
The assembly process requires putting together multiple components. While the manufacturer describes it as easy to assemble, reviewers report varying experiences. One reviewer with carpentry experience took three hours, while a Taskrabbit professional required 100 minutes. The unit comes with assembly instructions, though some reviewers reported missing parts that delayed completion. The freestanding design means no wall mounting is necessary, providing placement flexibility. The hardware and mechanisms appear substantial, though one negative reviewer reported the bed falling apart on first use, suggesting potential quality control issues. The desk surface is solid hardwood, providing a stable workspace. The integrated drawer offers additional storage while maintaining a clean aesthetic when closed.
Performance
As a sleeping solution, reviewers describe the included memory foam mattress as comfortable for a Murphy bed. The 6-inch design with gel-infusion provides adequate support according to user feedback. One reviewer uses it nightly in a studio apartment and finds it very comfortable. The bed frame receives praise for sturdiness from multiple users, with one noting it's consequently on the medium heavy side. The transformation mechanism works smoothly according to positive reviews, with one user describing great folding action. The unit can be put away in about five minutes when having guests over. The desk surface provides functional workspace, with the USB charging station keeping devices powered during use. The 800-pound weight capacity suggests robust construction suitable for regular use.
Some performance concerns emerge from reviews. Delivery issues affected multiple buyers, with one experiencing a week-and-a-half delay and another reporting missing parts. Assembly challenges are noted by several reviewers, with completion times ranging from 100 minutes to three hours even with experience. One negative review reported the bed falling apart completely on first use, indicating potential durability issues in some units. The freestanding design means it can be placed anywhere, but its 149-pound weight makes repositioning difficult. The mattress, while comfortable according to reviewers, is only 6 inches thick, which some might find thinner than standard mattresses. The walnut finish maintains appearance with simple dry cloth wiping. Overall, when properly assembled, the unit performs its dual functions effectively according to most reviewers.
